What is Wassail? Understanding Woodstock’s Cherished Winter Festival

Wassail Weekend is one of the most magical times to visit Woodstock. The festival celebrates old English winter traditions mixed with local Vermont charm.

“Wassail” comes from an old word meaning “to be in good health.” A long time ago, it referred to the name of a spiced alcoholic beverage and the process of sharing it with friends. Today, it has grown into a joyful community celebration.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday markets, and the famous Wassail Parade. During the parade, people dress in Victorian costumes and march through the historic streets.

Local shops and restaurants join in with special treats and cozy drinks. Sunday Drive isn’t an exception. Our daily specials make the celebration even more exciting.

Wassail Weekend 2025: What to Experience

When it comes to Wassail events, we recommend experiencing as much as you possibly can. But the cold weather often makes it somewhat difficult to spend the entire day outdoors. So here are the highlights to consider this year:

Friday, December 12:

  • Visit Billings Farm & Museum: Step back in time and see the history of conservation stewardship in America and on the farm over the past 3 centuries
  • Shop Local: Stop by the Artisan Market on the Village Green and check out handmade gifts, art, and treats from Vermont makers.

Saturday, December 13

  • Enjoy the Wassail Parade: Watch horses, carriages, and people in old-fashioned costumes fill the streets with holiday cheer. It’s the heart of the festival!
  • Join the Evening Fun: Stick around for the tree lighting, bonfire, and carol singing on the Green.

 Sunday, December 14

  • Skate with Santa: Head to Union Arena for ice skating and holiday fun with Santa himself.
  • Holiday Treats and Crafts: Visit the craft fair or enjoy cookies and cupcakes with the kids before saying goodbye to another magical Wassail Weekend.
