Every year, April 20 rolls around, and people across Vermont find their own version of the day. For some, that means a slow morning and a walk through Woodstock’s covered-bridge countryside. For others, it’s a chance to pick up something new at a local dispensary, swap recommendations with neighbors, and mark the occasion with intention. If you’re spending 4/20 in Woodstock, this is your guide to making the most of it, from the story behind the holiday to what’s waiting for you at Sunday Drive.
What Is 4/20?
If you’ve ever wondered about the 4/20 history behind this unofficial holiday, the story starts not with a law or a landmark, but with five high school students in San Rafael, California in 1971.
That group of friends, who called themselves the “Waldos,” had heard a rumor about an abandoned cannabis crop growing near Point Reyes. They set a meeting time of 4:20 p.m. by the statue of Louis Pasteur on campus, using the phrase “420 Louis” as their code.
Through their connections to the Grateful Dead’s touring community, “420” spread from a small-town California code word into a nationally recognized piece of cannabis culture by the 1990s, helped along by High Times magazine, which publicized both the term and the April 20 gatherings forming around it.

Know Before You Go: Vermont Cannabis Laws and Responsible Use
Adult-use cannabis is legal in Vermont for adults 21 and older. Here’s what that means in practice:
- Where you can consume: Cannabis use is permitted in private residences where the property owner allows it. Public consumption at parks, sidewalks, and vehicles are not legal. If you’re visiting from New Hampshire or another state, Vermont’s rules apply from the moment you arrive.
- Crossing state lines: Cannabis cannot be transported across state lines, even between states where it is legal. Purchase what you plan to use during your stay.
- Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Vermont and carries real consequences. Plan transportation before you start your day.
- Start low, go slow: Especially true with edibles and concentrates. Give your body time to respond before taking more.
- Out-of-state visitors: Visitors aged 21+ from New Hampshire or any other state can legally purchase cannabis from licensed Vermont dispensaries. You’ll need a valid government-issued ID showing age.
